Shigenobu Nagamori

Chairman, President and CEO
Nidec Corporation

Shigenobu Nagamori was born in Kyoto in 1944. He graduated from the Institute of Vocational Training (currently known as the Polytechnic University) with a major in electric engineering in 1967. In July 1973, at the age of 28, he founded Nidec Corporation and assumed the role of President and Representative Director (he also holds the office of Chairman since 2014). In 1988, 15 years after the foundation of the company, Nidec Corporation was listed on the second section of the Osaka Securities Exchange. 10 years later, in 1998, the company was promoted to the first section of the Osaka Securities Exchange and listed on the first section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Furthermore, in 2001 the company was also listed on the New York Stock Exchange (delisted as of 2016).

From the 1980s and onwards, Nagamori has adopted a strategy of actively pursuing mergers and acquisitions, both domestically and abroad. With more than 50 companies integrated under its umbrella—including Nidec Sankyo Corporation, Nidec Copal Corporation, Nidec Tosok Corporation, Nidec Copal Electronics Corporation, Nidec-Read Corporation, Nidec Motor Corporation (formerly Emerson Electric Co.'s motors & controls business) etc.—the Nidec Group has grown into the world's number-one comprehensive motor maker under Nagamori’s leadership.

Nagamori has also attracted attention for advocating the necessity of "Passion", "Enthusiasm" and "Tenacity" and the importance of thinking and acting positively and proactively, as well as for his philosophy of promoting recruitment, development and utilization of human resources regardless of academic background, career history, age or gender.

Nagamori was selected as one of the 30 best CEOs in the world by the American magazine Barron's in 2006. In 2014, he topped the Nikkei Business’ "best CEO selected by CEOs" ranking published for the first time in the Japanese magazine. In the following year (2015), Nagamori received the “Invention Implementation Achievement Award” in the National Commendation for Invention.
