Toshiro Mutoh

Chairman, Daiwa Institute of Research

Born : July, 1943

Toshiro Mutoh was appointed chairman of the Daiwa Institute of Research (DIR) in July 2008, and since then he has been a constant source of wisdom, gleaned from his long career, for the institution.
Toshiro Mutoh spent over forty years working in the public sector, first with the Ministry of Finance and later with the Bank of Japan (BOJ). He was appointed administrative vice minister of Finance in June 2000. Over the long term, he was engaged in the planning and execution of monetary and fiscal policy for the Cabinet.
In March 2003, Toshiro Mutoh took office as the deputy governor of BOJ. He also played akey role in the lifting of the zero interest rate policy.
Toshiro Mutoh was a visiting professor at the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology of the University of Tokyo (2008-11) and he also served as a chief director of The Kaisei Academy (Kaisei Senior and Junior High School). He continues to contribute to the education of young people in a variety of areas.
